Golf in Campania – Region of the Month

Campania is mountainous and hilly, with the Neapolitan Apennines in the far east giving way to the slightly lower heights of the Matese and Picentini mountains and the mountainous area of Cilento which extends to the coast in the south.

This region is rich in culture, particularly concerning food, music, architecture, and archaeological and ancient sites, such as Pompeii, Herculaneum, Oplontis, Paestum, Aeclanum, Stabiae, and Velia.

Let's have a look!

Campaign: Curiosity and History

Campania boasts a rich tapestry of history, woven over thousands of years. Ancient Greek influences are evident in the founding of cities like Cumae and Naples, laying the groundwork for a vibrant culture. The region has witnessed the rise and fall of empires, from the Romans who valued its fertile lands, to the Lombards and Normans who left their mark.

Throughout all this, Naples remained a pre-eminent centre, flourishing as a cultural and economic hub of the Renaissance. The Middle Ages brought shifting power dynamics, with Byzantines, Lombards, and Normans vying for control. Naples also withstood periods of Spanish rule and popular revolts.

In the 19th century, winds of unification swept across Italy, culminating in Garibaldi's conquest of Naples in 1860. The 20th century brought social and economic changes, and today Campania is beloved for its breathtaking landscapes, its appetising cuisine, and its archaeological treasures such as Pompeii and Herculaneum.

Food and Wine in Campania

Campania, as one might imagine, is rich in culinary and wine traditions.

Here are our top tips for our beloved golfers and travellers:

Pizza Are explanations needed? The only advice for those who haven't already is to treat themselves to an authentic Neapolitan pizza. They make it like that there, in few other places.

Spaghetti alla puttanesca A typical Neapolitan pasta recipe with tomatoes, olive oil, olives, anchovies, chilli, capers and garlic. Simple but very tasty.

Sfogliatella It is a baked confectionery product, made of rough puff pastry filled with ricotta cheese and candied orange cubes.

Taurasi Deep ruby red colour with garnet hues; fine and intense aroma with hints of berries, spices, cherries and plums; engaging and elegant flavour with a long finish, hints of plum and cherry, black pepper and liquorice.

Greco di Tufo Greco di Tufo wines are known for their spicy, herbaceous and citrus notes. On the palate, the wines are medium-full bodied with relatively high acidity.

Lacryma Christi Produced within the Vesuvius National Park, in compliance with the Campanian winemaking tradition. It is a wine characterised by a ruby red colour and a pleasant aroma of red fruits and spices, with a dry taste that is balanced yet complex and full-bodied.

What to Do in Campania

Are you wondering what the best activities – apart from golf – and excursions you can do in Campania are?

Here is our top 3:

Small-group tour of Pompeii with an archaeologist Enjoy guaranteed access to Pompeii, one of Italy's most popular attractions, and take advantage of “skip-the-line” benefits, ideal for those on a budget. Explore with an archaeologist guide – something few other travellers can do – and learn more about the site than you could on your own.

Small-group Capri and Blue Grotto day boat tour from Sorrento: The Blue Grotto is Capri's most famous sight, but the long wait at the cave's entrance means many boat tours skip this stop. With this tour, you'll set sail in the early morning to avoid the crowds and minimise waiting times. After admiring the grotto, you'll take a boat trip around the island with stops for swimming and free time to explore the mainland.

Small group tours from Naples to the Blue Grotto, Anacapri and Capri: If you want to discover Capri in just one day, this is the perfect tour for you: meet your local guide at the main port of Naples, Molo Beverello, and together with a high-speed ferry, reach one of the most enchanting islands in the world!

Best Golf Courses in Campania

This region boasts a few golf courses, but they are nonetheless very good. Although only one of them has 18 holes, they all offer challenging courses across varied terrain and environments.

Here they are:

From left to right: Volturno, Napoli, Mirabella, Salerno

Volturno Golf Club:

Il Volturno Golf is a landscape gem immersed in a Mediterranean pine forest. The golf course, of great and varied technical interest, extends over fifty hectares of undulating terrain, rich in dunes and water hazards. It is an eighteen-hole course of extraordinary impact, with the front nine immersed in the pine forest and the back nine created on the sandy terrain near the sea.

Napoli Golf Club:

Il Circolo Golf Napoli is hosted by the U.S. Navy within the Carney Park Golf Course.

Carney Park is a US military recreational facility located in the extinct volcano of Campiglione, in the Phlegraean Fields area. The 93-acre site is located about 23 km west of Naples. It is named after Admiral Robert B. Carney, who was Chief of Naval Operations during the Eisenhower administration.

The Carney Park Golf Course is a one-of-a-kind golf course. It has been described as “a 40-acre oasis of green”. It is a 9-hole course with dual tee boxes, suitable for accomplished players, beginners, and juniors.

Access to the course is permitted only to US military personnel and Napoli Golf Members.

Mirabella Golf Club

The Mirabella Golf Club course, a nine-hole course approved by the Italian Golf Federation, is primarily due to the creativity of nature, which has designed terraces, undulations, and very evocative pathways amongst the Irpinian hills, which have for centuries been renowned for the production of high-value wine and oil. It is in this extraordinary setting that the Mastroberardino family intended to design their own golf course, following these natural patterns, in the most compatible way with the natural, landscape, and productive context of the Avellino hills.

Salerno Golf Club:

The Salerno Golf Club offers professional instructors with whom you can arrange private or group lessons, depending on your playing needs and expectations. Furthermore, there is a clubhouse, a restaurant, a bar, a pro shop, and a rental service for equipment, trolleys, and carts.
