The Algarve’s best-kept secret is its low season
By November the crowds have gone home and the Algarve becomes what golfers always hoped it would be. The thermometer settles between 20 and 22 degrees, the greens have recovered from the summer, and a fourball can go round without ever waiting on a tee.
The light is the other reason. Low, golden, long — the kind of afternoon light that makes the umbrella pines throw shadows across the fairways of Vilamoura and turns the Atlantic silver behind the cliffs. Five rounds in seven days is a comfortable rhythm here, with time left for a long lunch by the marina and an afternoon doing nothing at all.
And it is close. A direct flight from Zurich puts you on the first tee the same afternoon you leave home.
The Algarve has two souls
Where you sleep changes the whole week. Both are right — they are simply different holidays.
Vilamoura & the Golden Triangle
The densest concentration of great golf in Europe, arranged around a marina of yachts and terraces. Five courses — Old Course, Victoria, Millennium, Pinhal, Laguna — sit within a few minutes of each other, and Vale do Lobo and Quinta do Lago are a short drive west. Evenings are easy here: everything is walkable, everything is open.
East Algarve & Tavira
Drive east and Portugal becomes itself again: salt pans and lagoons, whitewashed villages, seafood in places with no menu in English. Here sits Monte Rei, the Jack Nicklaus Signature course ranked number one in Portugal, kept deliberately quiet — a limited number of players a day, caddie carts, and the Serra do Caldeirão behind every green.

Every course in these packages is between four and eight minutes’ drive from your hotel — fifteen at Monte Rei. No motorway transfers before a 09:00 tee time, no hour in the car after eighteen holes. You will notice it on day three, when everyone else is still driving.
