Golf in Umbria - Region of the Month

Umbria is a region located in the central area of Italy and is home to some of the best natural landscapes and historical landmarks in the whole country. Most of the preserved medieval villages and towns are located in its territory, making Umbria a great destination for architecture, history and photography enthusiasts.

The Appennini Mountains form a unique environment which has been respected and preserved throughout history, making it one of the most natural regions in Italy.

Let’s briefly explore this wonderful region together:

Umbria Curiosities and History

A region which has become increasingly popular amongst tourists year-on-year, Umbria, known as the ‘green heart of Italy’, is a location that captures the true essence of Italian life. Made up of rolling countryside and historic towns and villages, in addition to authentic food and lively culture, it is no surprise that tourists are searching for Umbria villas to explore and learn more about this intriguing region.

Located in central Italy, Umbria gained its name from the Umbri, an ancient tribe of people who settled in the area around the 6th century BC. However, this is not the earliest civilisation to settle here, with archaeological proof dating back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The Umbri tribe flourished early in Italian history, building civilized towns to the east of the region, including Spoleto, Gubbio, Città di Castello and the world-renowned Assisi.

Food & Wine in Umbria

Umbria, as one might imagine, is rich in culinary and winemaking traditions.

Here are our best recommendations for our beloved golfers and travelers:

Pasta alla Norcina: Iconic pasta recipe enriched by the local sausage, Salsiccia di Norcia, cooked with olive oil and truffle. This delicate yet sophisticated plate will surprise you in many different ways.

Costolette di Agnello Fritte: Literally fried lamb chops, this dish is as simple and as tasty as it can get. The delicate lamb meat is deep fried in olive or peanut oil to achieve the perfect combination of flavor and texture.

Baccalà alla Ceraiola: This typical fish plate is very savory thanks to the rosemary-based seasoning, which makes the cod (baccalà) rich and crispy after it’s cooked in the oven with oil and white wine.

Grechetto: Fruity aromas of dried flowers and hazelnut stand out on the nose, with a good acidity. The perfect pairing for pasta plates, vegetables and fish.

Sagrantino: This typical, rare wine is bold and very rich in flavor, combining notes of different fruits and essences. To be paired with savory dishes and meat recipes.

Gamay: Gamay is a light-bodied red wine that’s similar in taste to Pinot Noir. Gamay wines are loved for their delicate floral aromas, subtle earthy notes, and surprising ability to pair with both rich pasta and meat dishes and delicate fish recipes.

Antognolla Golf:

One of the most spectacular and challenging golf courses in Italy, the eighteen-holes at Antognolla feature long, cliff-lined fairways, beautiful water hazards and large, undulating greens. Conceived by renowned designer Robert Trent Jones Junior, the clever layout makes Antognolla an exciting and satisfying course for golfers of all abilities.

In 2020, Antognolla Golf won the prestigious title of ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ at the World Golf Awards and received the same nomination in 2021.

In 2022 Antognolla Golf has once again topped the list of Italy’s best golf courses, claiming the 2022 Award for ‘Italy’s Best Golf Course’ at the World Golf Awards and has been featured within the UK magazine Today's Golfer Top100 rankings.

Perugia Golf Club:

Perugia Golf Club is located just 6 km from the historic center of the Etruscan city of Perugia and strategically positioned near art cities of great historical and cultural interest, such as Assisi, Gubbio, Todi, Spoleto and Cortona.

The gently undulating course is a par 72, the core of which dates back to the late 1950s.

The clubhouse is carved out of an old lime kiln from 1921, of which it retains the imperious towers, which guard the course reminiscent of English golf courses.

Lamborghini Golf Club:

The Lamborghini Golf Course, designed by Ferruccio Lamborghini, is set along the pleasant hilly landscape of Lake Trasimeno. In addition to the nine holes of the course, one can enjoy the large driving range equipped with putting and pitching green where the golf school is operating.  In a dominant position is the modern and cozy clubhouse with Secretariat, Pro shop and Bar.

Ferruccio wanted to increase the popularity of golf in the area and make the game more accessible to local people. Furthermore, here you can taste and buy Tenuta Lamborghini’s wines, eat and stay at the property’s resort.

Caldese Golf Club:

Caldese Golf Club, founded in 1999, is located within a wonderful natural setting: enriched by the local vegetation and natural ponds, it’s surrounded by oak trees and bushes.

The course, featuring 9 holes of high technical difficulty, is pleasant to play thanks to the terrain it’s built on, the picturesque landscape and the mild climate, which allows its use during all months of the year.
