Puglia Curiosities and History

Puglia boasts a rich history dating back tens of thousands of years. Evidence of early inhabitants can be found in the Paleolithic remains near Altamura and the impressive cave art sites. After the Romans conquered the region, it faced centuries of raids by the Saracens.

Puglia truly flourished under the reign of Frederick II of Swabia, who earned the titles of King of Sicily, Holy Roman Emperor, and even King of Jerusalem. Beloved for his strong personality, he is credited with ushering in a golden age for the region.

Food & Wine in Puglia

Puglia, as one might imagine, is rich in culinary and winemaking traditions.

Here are our best recommendations for our beloved golfers and travelers:

Orecchiette con le Cime di Rapa: A light and tasty pasta recipe, with handmade orecchiette (ear-shaped pasta) and broccoli rabe (or rapini). The most iconic plate of the region and one of the most savory pasta recipes one might ever taste.

Bombette: Don't let the name fool you – these Apulian delights are flavor bombs in disguise! Bite into a Bombetta and be surprised by a burst of melty cheese and savory cured ham.

Panzerotti: Panzerotti are half-moon pizza turnovers, filled with tomato sauce, mozzarella cheese and other tasty ingredients. They can be both baked in the oven or fried, for a juicy and delightful result.

Primitivo: This bold, full-bodied red wine is strong and delicious. Its flavors are pronounced, and are often reminiscent of very ripe dark berries, as well as liquorice and black pepper. The perfect pairing for meat dishes.

Negroamaro: This typical Apulian wine is deep red and very savory. Its aroma is delicately fruity, with cherry and citrus notes. Yet another great pairing for red, savory meats.

Malvasia: Malvasia white wine is a popular still white wine from the Puglia region, with a straw-yellow color and floral and fruity aromas, and a sweet taste. Great to be paired with fish and light recipes.
